Intel dominates the processor market. The Institute of analyst firm IDC has just released figures concerning the sales of processors for the fourth quarter of 2009. Unsurprisingly, Intel dominates the market with 87 .3% in the segment of mobile processors.
In the fourth quarter of 2009, global sales of processors increased by 31.1% over a year. The entire 2009, even though volumes disposed were up 2.5%, there was a fall of 7.1% equal in value to 28.6 billion dollars. In the area of mobile processors, including Atom, sales increased by 11 .7% from the third quarter of 2009. In value, however, this market has responded with a decrease of 6.7% quarter on quarter, an average which covers the CPU for notebook PCs and desktop PCs.
From a global point of view Intel wins in the fourth quarter of 2009, 80 .5% of market share (- 0.6%) against 19.4% for AMD (+0.7%) and 0.2% for EIA. As for mobile processors, Intel gets the best performance, since the market shares for 87 .3%, but still fall of 0.7%. AMD rips on 12.7% market share (+0.8%) and VIA 0.1%. Throughout 2009, the market shares in Intel CPUs for mobile computers have already reached the 86 .8% (- 0.3%), those of AMD 12.8% (+0.8%) and EIA 0.3% (- 0.5 %).
IDC believes that 2010 should see a progression of the total sales of processors equal to 15.1% compared to 2009. The move to 32nm production process, the arrival of CPUs Core Arrandale i3/i5/i7 and the launch of the new platform Pine Trail for netbooks Intel should help to maintain its leadership and try to gain market share in mobile computing .
