Hospital De L’Institut Curie Buy A Camera Second Tomotherapy Radiation Therapy. TomoTherapy Incorporated (NASDAQ: TOMO) announced today that the hospital of the Institut Curie in France, bought a second unit of radiation therapy TomoTherapy (R ) to support the increasing demand for radiotherapy by intensity modulation (IRMT). The hospital of the Institut Curie treats cancer patients with TomoTherapy since March 2000 when he became the first hospital in France to adopt. Now, with this recent acquisition, TomoTherapy eight units are in use in France to treat cancer patients for routine, complex or rare.
“We typically treat more complex cases – such as sarcomas, tumors of the head and neck, with volumes of multiple treatment and cancers of the lung, pancreas and liver – with TomoTherapy,” said Dr. Alain Fourquet, chief of radiation oncology at the Hospital of the Institute Curie. “Adding a second unit will allow us to increase our ability to process a larger number of patients requiring radiotherapy for advanced and allows us to broaden the types of information that we can treat to include the pelvic tumors and certain complicated cases of breast cancer. In addition, we hope to use the second TomoTherapy unit to assist us to conduct prospective clinical trials and further research projects in physics. ”

The second TomoTherapy unit at the hospital of the Institut Curie, will replace a very old machine radiation by cobalt. The compactness of the TomoTherapy unit will allow the hospital to install the new technology while minimizing the need for a major renovation. The hospital had decided to buy his first camera TomoTherapy after the call by the National Cancer Institute for research proposals to promote the IMRT technology which was not yet available in France.

The Institut Curie will present three texts related to treatment with TomoTherapy at the annual meeting of ASTRO American Society for Radiation Oncology to be held from 1st to November 5, 2009, in Chicago. The scientific papers highlight research at the Institut Curie for rare and difficult clinically in cases of plasmocytoma and malignant lymphoma extended in conjunction with transplantation of stem cells, and preliminary studies on Use of TomoTherapy technology in the treatment of breast cancer.
