Unveiled at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, the first netbook based on platform Nvidia ION 2, Acer Aspire One 532G, has been tested by our German colleagues, with a result that surprised.
Acer Aspire One 532G was tested on FutureMark 3DMark03 benchmark. Video games used for testing were reproduced easily and fast, but at the end that this disappoints netbook only got 3049 points total. Certainly, the platform Nvidia ION 2 manages to be more performant GMA X3150 chip, but still below the performance achieved by the old configuration, consisting of an Intel Atom N270 and Nvidia ION first generation.

Asus Eee PC 1201N get such a score between 1500 and 1600 points in 3DMark06 with Windows XP and Samsung N510 totals about 3470 points in 3DMark03. In other words, the couple Atom N450 and Nvidia ION 2 would offer a lower score of 400 points compared to the combination Atom N270 and Nvidia ION. So this is a disappointing result for Acer Aspire One 532G, which fear the worst for other netbooks based ION 2 and planned in the coming weeks.
Aspire One 532G However, as pre-production sample may have been penalized by the Nvidia driver for ION 2 still not very mature. Also, after these results, Acer and Nvidia could revise the design and integration platform ION 2. However the format Mini PCI Nvidia ION 2 could negatively affect performance, with an occupied bandwidth sufficient to handle all the power of ION 2. We remain awaiting the first test on the final version of the Netbook Acer to know the real performance of ION 2 + Pineview Atom N450.
Recall also that Nvidia ION 2 has a considerable advantage compared to first generation ION: Support for technology Optimus. The latter is able to determine which component graphics (GMA X3150 integrated into the CPU or ION 2 in mini PCI) is the most suitable use given. The user should then gain autonomy than first-generation ION, especially because the new Intel Pine Trail consumes less energy than Atom binomial N270/N280 and GMA 950.
